Uninvited Guest
by Joanna Barker

You showed up on my doorstep that Sunday morning in January.
Your bags were packed,
but I couldnít tell how long you planned on staying.
Seven years later, your dirty dishes remain on the counter,
your laundry in a heap on the floor.
You havenít inquired about check-out time
but are sure interested in the continental breakfast.
Whereís your rent check? Grocery money?
You havenít been much help around here since
your unannounced arrival;
come to think of it, you havenít been any help at all.
Iíve made excuses for you, broken plans and dates for you,
missed days of work for you.
Some people have started to think that you donít exist.
No one seems to know when youíre going to pack your belongings
and take off.
Trust me, Iíve asked around.
Whenever youíre ready to go, though, you know where the door is.
You can let yourself out.
