Fire and Ice
by Laura Merleau
The cold blue is dripping
onto the hot yellow.
The hot yellow is held
up by hotter orange and
red. All around
the edges a cold sickly
green impinges on
my eyes and some
other part of me
that deserves to
be named yet I
have no name for.
Pure pain, I’d call
it – but pain is
not a body part.
Or is it? The
colors in my head
meanwhile go on
swirling through
their acrylic on
canvas choreography.
Here’s another
unusual pairing:
the cold black and hot
red creeping in along
the bottom right
edge of the frame.
I will not call
this pain. I will
not be so nice.
I will enter the
dark center of
these bright colors
and wait out
the storm. Next
time, and next time,
maybe I’ll know
a way to stay
centered the way
I am now. Just
say it. I am
centered. And it will
be so? It will be
so. It will be. In
how many minutes?
How many years?
When it is time.
I will be ready.
