The Dance and Cry
by Christopher Aaron Chapman

The Devil climbs inside my skull
To test the limits of my control
Through my neck he lights aflame
A burning sword of fiery pain
"Dance with me," his mad request.
I shake my head, he claws my flesh.

Tension rising in my throat
Shredding pain shoots through my nose
Talons snatch behind my eye
Pulling stabbing, "Dance and cry."

I will not dance, I shall not cry.
The pain is his, the will is mine.

Tension builds, as sitting still
No longer calms my failing will.
I stand and pace, as more and more
The Beast let's out his wailing roar.
Into the night and winters snow
I head outside to cool the blow.

The shrieks and moans ripped from my chest
Defeat my will as I fail the test.
I pound my head and curse the dark.
I jump and shout and shake my head.

It's wrong that pain can be so strong.
The last of dignity is gone.
Talons slash my burning eye:
Piercing, screaming "Dance and cry."

So now at last, I dance and cry
My will is lost, his pain is mine
