The Battle
by Diana Van de Kamp
I had my first at
seventeen.
And I have had a hundred
In the years in between.
Pins and needles
Start piercing my head
Light and sound
Make me wish I were dead
My speech slurred
My hands numb
My vision blurred
My stomach sick
All I can do is nothing at all
And feeling functional
Is a feeling I cannot recall.
There have been times when I have succumb
There have been times when I have fought
Many have been full on
And a few have been caught.
Doctors, Therapist, Specialists and pills,
I have seen them all and got refills.
Western medicine meets medicine from the east
No pill or philosophy
Has tamed the beast.
Meditation, Yoga, Acupuncture and prayer
Trying anything for relief
But I am not quite there.
I'll keep pushing on
Until I conquer and divide
Anything to make the pain subside
With nothing to loose
And everything to gain
I'll keep on battling
The dreaded migraine.
