The Agony of Dancing Lights
by Karl Ridge

I squeeze my eyes tight
and will it away
but the dancing lights
come for an hourís stay.

Thereís no pain at first
but I know it will be.
The icepick-eye is the worst
it drains the life out of me.

The dancing lights taper
like sun-drenched rain.
And the new research papers
say itís affecting my brain.

The aura reduces sight
so I seek a quiet place.
When at its height,
the migraine hurts my whole face.

Itís just a headache, you say
and I try to work through the pain.
But it doesnít go away
and Iím too tired to feign.

I donít want to be a nag
but the radio is too loud
and my favorite foods make me gag
and I should stay away from crowds.

I donít want to be a bore
but I must stay home tonight.
When my body feels at war,
you wonít want me in your sight.

So many fun times passed me by
when the pain began to spread
It always starts behind my right eye.
Sometimes I want to stay in bed.

Vacations are always planned
around this cycle of good and bad days.
Like an hourglass of elusive sand
the feel-good time never stays.

Just a headache, you say again
and I want you to feel it, too.
But I wish this agony on no man.
It hurts my shoulders, hurts my tooth.

So I pop earplugs and close the drapes
and wait to feel like me once more.
It may be hours, even days
before Iím ready to walk out the door.
