October 15, 2010 Dear Teri, I hope this letter finds you well in WV – as usual, I will open with my regrets that I have not been in touch sooner but, as you know, things are moving at a whirlwind pace here at the NHF office. I want to fill you in on the details of the Regional Conferences (and to thank you for being a part of the first one in Dallas, November 12 and 13). Things continue to evolve but this should paint a reliable picture of what folks will experience at this event. As you know, the evening of the 12th is for migraineurs, people with headache disorders (such as cluster headaches, etc.) and their families. However, I am going to first describe the Continuing Medical Education program to be held for doctors and other healthcare providers the next morning. Why describe that first? The patient education conference will use the same topics, presenters, and basic approach as that of a fully accredited CME course! The presentations will be a bit shorter and use less technical detail but NHF is trying to bridge the gap of awareness between doctors and their patients when dealing with the complex diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Doctors Susan Hutchinson and Bob Kaniecki will lead with keynote addresses on Chronic and Acute Migraine. After that, all of the day’s presenters, including Dr. John Claude Krusz, Dr. Stuart Black, and Dr. Steve Linder will participate in a panel discussion with extensive Q&A opportunities. After a short break, the CME participants will break out into three groups for workshops with our local experts (Krusz, Black, and Linder) discussing the Relationship between Migraine & Stroke, Innovative Pharmacology, and Pediatric Migraine. During this session for the health care providers, Doctors Hutchinson and Kaniecki will be conducting ten special consults with area doctors regarding their more challenging cases. (The consults are on a first come first serve basis, with advance registration available – if you are reading this and think it applies to you, make your doctor aware of this opportunity). Friday night’s conference will have a similar arrangement. The doors will open at 5:30PM for registration, refreshments, and an exhibit area featuring local practitioners and national companies (pharma, medical equipment, on-line resources, et cetera). During this time, we will ask participants to offer questions they would like to hear answered by our experts – the most common topics will be covered first but there should be time for follow up questions from the floor. At 7:00, the same keynote speakers will lead off followed by the introduction of the panel. We are still working out some details on the order of events after this but there will be presentations from the three Dallas doctors and some panel discussion focusing on the questions we gathered. Additionally, there will be a presentation featuring people sharing their personal stories related to migraine. Your readers should know that I have asked you to facilitate the presentations by three local patient advocates – each will discuss the unique circumstance of their diagnosis and treatment. Somewhere at the end, I will have a few minutes to talk about NHF and the future of our organization and the regional conferences. Please, if you attend, stay after to discuss how we can make these events more productive, more educational, and more fun –these are meant to be the beginning of much more local activity in communities around the country! For details about the time, location, speakers, THIS BROCHURE will be useful but people should feel free to call me directly. Thanks for all your help. Bob Contact or visit the NHF:
